We are proud to announce the official launch of its innovative ACOA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) Service—a vital new programme offering emotional support, family mediation, and practical mentoring for vulnerable young adults aged 16-24 living with the lasting effects of growing up in households impacted by alcohol dependency. This project combines emotional resilience-building with professional development, offering young people the tools they need to break cycles of trauma and build sustainable futures.

The ACOA service represents a new approach to addressing the unique challenges faced by young people transitioning into adulthood. With a strong focus on early intervention, the programme provides practical help and emotional pathways that align with individual goals and experiences.

Why the ACOA Service Matters

Living in a home with alcohol dependency can leave lasting emotional scars and create difficulties during critical developmental stages. Many young adults find themselves carrying burdens linked to trauma, financial instability, mental health challenges, and strained relationships. The ACOA service directly responds to this need, offering early intervention, practical advice, counselling, and support pathways at a key moment in participants’ lives.

The service focuses on:

  • Breaking intergenerational cycles of dysfunction
  • Teaching life skills for independence and resilience
  • Addressing ACOA traits that can impact mental health and career prospects
  • Providing family mediation opportunities to heal broken communication barriers

The programme includes practical support, mentoring, one-on-one emotional support, and counselling, with family mediation sessions forming a vital cornerstone of healing for both the young person and their parent.

The basis for evidence

Fran, GASPED Trustee and an individual with lived experience, shared her own journey, providing insight into the vital role of support during this pivotal stage:

“‘So many drug support services leave people feeling hopeless and there’s a complete postcode lottery in what is available. We are facing a forgotten generation of children deeply affected by addiction in the household, especially as addiction is linked to so many other issues.”

Niraj, CFO GASPED and an individual with lived experience said: “Wakefield District has the highest recorded rate of deaths to alcoholism and addiction. Whilst much is being done to help the alcoholics and addicts, the families affected by this are often forgotten.”

The ACOA service uses a person-centred, co-produced approach, allowing participants to set personal goals and pathways for growth with the guidance and expertise of trained professionals.

Early Intervention with Long-Term Impact

The objectives of the ACOA programme extend beyond immediate support. The service seeks to provide participants with skills and strategies that lead to longer-term benefits, such as:

  • Improved social skills and resilience
  • Increased educational and employment opportunities
  • Emotional stability and mental health recovery
  • Strengthened family relationships and improved personal safety

These changes not only improve the individual’s future but contribute to better community outcomes through reduced social isolation, improved mental health, and greater community cohesion.

Collaborative and Accessible Support

The ACOA programme has established multiple referral routes to ensure accessibility for all young people in need. These pathways include connections with:

  • Youth support services
  • NHS services
  • Jobcentres
  • Schools and colleges
  • Community hubs and faith groups

GASPED’s strong local partnerships have historically enabled successful programmes, and this referral network will facilitate timely access to this much-needed service.

Creating Change, One Young Person at a Time

The ACOA service is a call to action for young people in West Yorkshire. Through tailored support, mentoring, and family mediation, GASPED aims to foster a brighter future for its participants.

Stan, CEO of GASPED, said:

“Our vision is to create opportunities for change through hope and empowerment. The ACOA programme is not just about addressing the trauma of the past—it’s about building strength, resilience, and opportunity for the future.”

This project represents more than support—it represents the chance to break cycles, foster leadership, and rebuild confidence for the next generation.
