The Art House in Wakefield is revolutionising arts and wellbeing through a unique partnership with GASPED, a community-focused charity in West Yorkshire. Together, they are launching this initiative that empower individuals, addresses social isolation, and provides creative outlets for vulnerable populations.
Men’s Creative Shed
The Art House has joined forces with GASPED to launch the Men’s Creative Shed in Autumn 2024. This initiative targets men who have historically been underrepresented in creative wellbeing programmes. Research from The Art House reveals that only 10% of participants in mixed-gender creative health courses were men, underscoring the need for a tailored approach.
The Men’s Creative Shed aims to engage men facing mental health challenges, including those experiencing isolation or recovering from substance abuse. By offering arts-based courses designed specifically for men, the project creates a safe and supportive space for participants to explore their creativity while building confidence and connections.
GASPED’s Role: Bridging Trust and Participation
GASPED brings decades of experience supporting vulnerable individuals across Wakefield. Their programmes, such as MAN MATTERS and initiatives for male victims of abuse, address critical gaps in mental health and emotional support for men.
With the Men’s Creative Shed, GASPED will play a pivotal role in recruiting participants and providing the trust-based support needed to encourage attendance. Their deep community connections will help ensure the program reaches those most in need.
The Art House’s role: Removing barriers to arts and creativity
The Art House is a vibrant visual arts centre in the heart of Wakefield featuring gallery spaces, a ceramics studio, a printmaking studio and a darkroom, hireable community spaces, a cafe and shop selling works by local artists. Established in 1994, The Art House uses art and creativity as a tool to drive social change, working with communities and cross-sector partners to address unmet needs. With Men’s Creative Shed, The Art House will engage with their wide-ranging community of professional artists and build on their proven track record of providing activities that engage the arts as a tool for mental health and wellbeing.
What the Men’s Creative Shed Offers
The programme will feature 10-week creative health courses, running eight times over two years. Key aspects include:
- Tailored Art Forms: Ceramics, printmaking, photography, woodwork, and more, based on participant interests.
- Flexible Venues: Initial sessions may be held in familiar community spaces, gradually transitioning to The Art House’s specialised Maker Spaces – a ceramics studio, printmaking studio and Darkroom.
- Professional Practitioners: Courses led by professional artists with experience and skills in their artform and working within the community to foster trust among participants.
- Supportive Environment: Small group settings that allow participants to bond, build confidence, and open up.
Experience has shown that longer courses are essential for participants to fully engage and benefit. By offering courses for 10 weeks, The Art House ensures that men have ample time to form meaningful connections and develop their creative skills.
The Impact of Creativity on Mental Health
Creativity is more than a pastime—it’s a powerful tool for healing and transformation. Through creative expression, participants can address deep-seated emotions, build resilience, and develop skills that extend beyond the art studio. For men in particular, the opportunity to explore their vulnerabilities in a non-judgmental environment can be life-changing.
Niraj, CFO GASPED reflects on the design of the project:
“When we were approached by the Art House to deliver this project, it was a ‘no brainer’ to me. Art played its role in my own recovery journey and it’s great to be able to offer it to our clients so that they can experience the therapeutic value of what’s on offer. The Art House is a fantastic venue for creativity, with the project leading to success stories from its initial cohort.”
Stan, CEO of GASPED, emphasised the importance of this collaboration:
“Our work with The Art House demonstrates the power of creativity to bridge gaps where traditional support services fall short. By combining our expertise, we’re giving men in Wakefield a chance to rediscover their potential and their place in the community.”
Diane, Arts and Health Programme Manager at The Art House highlighting the importance of partnership working:
“We are very excited to be building on Re-Emerge – our three-year old arts and health programme providing creative health opportunities for local residents to connect together, share experiences, and engage in creative activities that promote wellbeing. We are excited to develop this new partnership with Gasped to fill a gap in creative health and find ways to offer males in the Wakefield district the opportunity to learn new skills, build on existing ones and connect with each other.”
Looking Ahead
The Men’s Creative Shed began with its first course in Autumn 2024, but the program’s potential extends far beyond its initial scope. By addressing a critical gap in mental health services for men, this initiative is setting a precedent for how arts and wellbeing can intersect to create meaningful change.
The Art House’s commitment to access and inclusion, coupled with GASPED’s trusted support network, ensures that these programs will not only transform individual lives but also strengthen the community as a whole.
