BEHIND THE SCENES & PLANNING
Love Hurts – Valentine’s Day Campaign
LOVE HURTS.
“This is the time of year we are meant to be in love. We feel like outsiders if we aren’t celebrating. Romantic dinners for 2, candle lit dinners, presents, heart felt sentiments and cuddly toys. It reads like a over done episode of the generation game or crackerjack, arms over following with gifts (without the cabbages) with joy and smiles all round. You might have seen our post and thought more overly soppy rose petals and scrolled on.
But lets get real….
Sometimes love hurts … it isn’t meant to and it doesn’t start out that way. But for some people Valentine’s Day, and lets be honest every other day of the year, isn’t quite lovely. I think to some degree we all understand what domestic abuse is. We have seen dramatic depictions on soaps like EastEnders, seen shocking things in the news. However, it isn’t always that obvious and we don’t recognise signs when we see them.
The way we view ourselves changes within abusive relationships. The way we measure our value becomes dependant on the views of the other person and we don’t recognise that our internal monologue is changing and we are devaluing ourselves.
You might be thinking what has all this got to do with a 20 second short about some rose petals and a bin on fire, and I get that the two things are kind of abstract.
I wanted to catch your attention and say that:
1. Things can look beautiful on the outside and be dangerous and damaging on the inside.
- We want romantic love, even when we know things are not right the desire to continue to make things right prevails which leads to damage and destruction. (Emotionally and physically.)
- Fire is properly symbolical of rebirth that whole phoneix in the fire thing. And even in a small way I wanted to say that it is possible to survive and thrive after experiencing domestic abuse. Linked below are a number of resources and services that can offer support to people that have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse.”
Jen, Support Worker.

Bringing the Campaign to Life
“The idea to do this came about at the same time as our 12 Days of Elfie Campaign.
We both became very quickly on the same page about the imagery we wanted to create and the message we wanted to protray.
Believe it or not, it actually took us several attempts to get the shot right. Jen was running around after every shot collecting the petals! Even though the actual video is only short, the effort it took behind to the scenes to get it right wasn’t so short. We actually had to change locations too for the first shot as it didn’t work; as you can see in the image on this page!
After all the clips had been filmed, I went onto edit the video, which took the amount of time I expected it to. There was back and forth with slight tweaks but overall it came together very smoothly.
After creating the video, we consulted the team to see everyone’s thoughts and feelings so that everyone could have a say. This is always beyond beneficial as everyone has their own perspective and thoughts. In this case, it helped massively as they added ideas and reassurance to say what we had created was good enough.
I love the choice of title, Love Hurts, as I believe it is so simple yet so affective. Everyone will read that and take it in different ways which mean something to them; and I think there is something so beautiful and powerful about that.”
Sarah, Marketing Manager.
