Domestic Abuse during UEFA Euro Football
You’re enjoying the Euros, whilst they are afraid.
This could be your daughter, son, sister, brother, mum, or dad.
Fear of the volatile alcohol fuelled emotions, erratic behaviour, verbal abuse and physical violence. This is not a reference to the acts of anti-social fans ruining the beautiful game at the tournament, we are talking about Domestic Abuse.
If you’re a football fan your probably excited about the UEFA Euro 2024 Champion and have positive hopes for England, or any other nation you may support.
For victims of Domestic Abuse, the Euros present a period of increased anxiety, with them knowing that the 50-50 chance of being on the end of the hoof or having to face the screamer is more likely going to be 9 times out of 10.
More often than not, Domestic Abuse is hidden, taking place behind closed doors with the victim left feeling cornered with no escape. They are manipulated into feeling powerless, worthless, and feel they are to blame for the situation they find themselves in as they are unsure how to get out of it.
If you’re out watching the game with your friends or family, you may see Domestic Abuse on the street and not see it for what it is.
Domestic Abuse Statistic
Research by University of Lancaster shows violent domestic abuse incidents increase by 38% when England loses football matches.
