What is Person-Centred Counselling?
Person-centred counselling, developed by Carl Rogers, is a humanistic approach that focuses on the client’s ability to grow and heal in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. The therapist facilitates self-exploration rather than directing or advising.
Key Principles & Goals:
- Unconditional Positive Regard: The counsellor offers acceptance, respect, and non-judgment, helping clients feel valued and safe.
- Empathy: Deep understanding of the client’s emotions fosters trust and emotional healing.
- Congruence (Authenticity): The therapist is genuine and transparent, encouraging openness and self-expression.
- Self-Exploration: Clients are encouraged to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences freely.
- Personal Growth & Self-Awareness: The approach helps clients develop self-acceptance and recognise their inner strengths.
- Empowerment & Autonomy: Clients build confidence in their ability to make choices and take control of their lives.
This approach is widely used to support emotional well-being, self-esteem and personal development.
